GSWB galvanized steel wire braid armoured cables

IMC GSWB armoured cables feature a galvanized steel wire braid to enhance mechanical protection while maintaining high flexibility compared to more rigid armouring designs. Depending on the configuration, the braid structure helps protect the cable core from crushing, accidental cuts, and rodent damage. Available versions include outer sheaths in PVC, PUR, or halogen-free compounds, depending on the specific designation.

Standard Construction

The standard design of this cable type consists of four concentric layers:

Conductors
Bare or tinned copper cores, typically in a flexible stranding (Class 5) to accommodate cable movement. Inner insulation can be PVC, elastomeric compound (HEPR), cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), or halogen-free (LSZH) compounds.

Inner Sheath (Bedding)
An extruded layer of thermoplastic or elastomeric material acting as a support for the armour. It protects the inner cores from crushing and abrasion against the metal wires.

Armour
A dense mechanical braid composed of high-strength galvanized steel wires (typical coverage: 70% to 80%).

Outer Sheath
Final protective jacket shielding the armour from weathering and chemicals. It is often made of transparent PVC (allowing visual inspection of the braid), colored PVC (gray/black), Polyurethane (PUR) for high abrasion resistance, or halogen-free (LSZH) compounds.

Flexibility and Reduced Bending Radius
Compared to steel wire armoured cables (SWA), the braid allows for tighter bending radii, making the cable suitable for complex routes, articulated trays, or connections on machinery subject to slight movement.

Tensile Strength
The steel mesh evenly distributes pulling stress during installation and cable pulling.

Technical Installation Note

To ensure effective protection and safety against indirect contact, the steel wire braid armour must always be grounded at both ends using suitable cable glands that ensure electrical continuity.
